Dextran is a white or off-white amorphous powder made through processing and refining a complex branched glucan from the fermentation of sucrose in leuconstoc mesenteriodes. It is used a blood volume enhancer which can increase the plasma colloid osmotic pressure, increase plasma volume and maintain blood pressure. It can also prevent erythrocyte and platelet aggregation, lower the blood viscosity thus enhance microcirculation. Dextran is also an ingredient of anti-anemics iron dextran and other dextran derivants.
With the application of “double enzyme one step” and membrane separation, the molecular mass of dextran has become adjustable. This method tackled the problems brought by the traditional method which was costly and polluting due to the massive use of alcohol, acid alkali, making the post-process simpler. It has provided strong support for extending the sugar industry and increasing the added-value of sucrose.
